There seems to be no end of travel bloggers out there. Many have given up everything to travel…they’ve quit their jobs, sold their homes, and hit the road. While it sounds exciting and romantic to live a nomadic lifestyle (Kim and I may even try it someday!), it’s just not feasible for everyone. What if you’re like us…you have job you enjoy, a home you love, and you’re not ready financially to leave everything behind? We created S’more Time Together to share ideas and inspiration on how you can make the most of your time together without having to leave your current life behind.
Imagine coming home from a successful day at work – a day when everything went right. You park the car and bound through the front door on cloud nine, feeling that you could conquer the world. Your little son runs up to give you a hug as the smell of a delightful supper fills the air. “Daddy” he says, “I wish you had a good job.” “Buddy, I think I’ve got pretty good job right now” you reply. “But Daddy, your job makes you stay gone too much. If you had a good job, like a school bus driver, you could take me to school and pick me up every day
Encounters like this play out in homes every day…in fact we experienced a similar situation recently in our home and it reinforced to us the need to make the most out of our time together as a family, and it helped inspire us to form this blog to encourage you to do the same. I’ve heard the tired line about how all your kids really want is to spend time with you but thought it was an outdated cliche. However, conversations like this one really make you pause and think about how much truth there really is in that notion.
We’ve heard it said that the family that travels together stays together. While we can’t guarantee that travel will keep your family together, it sure has helped us…and lots of other people too! Getting out there and discovering new places creates unexpected adventures and experiences that you will treasure for a lifetime. Sure, you will remember the amazing views, unique sounds, and delicious tastes of your vacation, but it’s the sense of adventure that comes from exploration that really tightens the family bond.
As a married couple, Kim and I have traveled to 49 of the 50 states…still waiting on North Dakota. While we’ve traveled by car, plane, bus and train our preferred method for family travel is by RV. We purchased a travel trailer last year (right before COVID-19 began to shut things down) and it has revolutionized how we spend time together. We’ve rediscovered the attraction behind the great American family road trip. Whether it’s overcoming the challenges of changing a flat tire on the side of the road, loosing power in an awesome boondocking location in the middle of nowhere, or being forced to pull over during a mountain hail storm in July, the sense of adventure and victory that arrises helps to cement family members together as a team. And we want to encourage you to have those experiences and reap those rewards in your family too.
Loved reading your blog on Memphis. We travel a lot with baseball and I always want to be prepared with what to do in each city. My husband and I have been traveling together to many places for 31 years now and he recently retired so more travel in the future. Yay! Also, love the part about time that God has given us and spending more time together as families. We have 3 kids also who are now grown and we spent many hours in cars traveling everywhere and they are all closer to each other now because of it.
